Promethazine works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance the body produces during an allergic reaction. It also affects areas of the brain that control nausea and vomiting. Common uses include:
Allergic Reactions: Relieving symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (runny nose, watery eyes), allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic skin reactions like hives.
Nausea and Vomiting: Preventing and controlling nausea and vomiting associated with certain types of surgery or anesthesia. (Note: It is generally not recommended for uncomplicated vomiting in children).
Motion Sickness: Active and prophylactic (preventative) treatment of motion sickness.
Sedation: Providing preoperative, postoperative, or obstetric sedation, and for short-term treatment of insomnia in adults.
